Pub #5 What Will Your Verse Be?
In the poem "Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone" by W. H. Auden shows love would not last forever as a theme. Throughout this piece, sadness tone was used. "He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong" (Auden 9-12). This quote represents that love does not last forever. Writer shows expressions how he lost his loved one. Loved one was everywhere he was, but now loved one can no longer be found. This can clearly see that the tone of this poem is very sad and gloomy. Without the loved one, "The Stars are not wanted now: put out every one; Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;" (Auden13-15). This quote shows that without the loved one life become useless. Nothing looks beautiful.
The poem "Let me not to the marriage of true minds" by William Shakespeare, shows the theme of love is not love. Shakespeare introduces a poem with a quote "Let me not to the marriage of true minds" (Shakespeare 1). This quote shows he is not to the marriage of true minds which means he doesn't think that a marriage is true love or minds. Hopelessness can be the tone of this poem. Shakespeare states "But bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever loved" (Shakespeare 12-14). Clearly explains that no man is ever loved. He is probably stating about his love on how hopelessness is his love is.
Two of poetries relates because of the theme and tone of these pieces. The similarities of each poems is that both writer emphasizes on how losing loved one and no man is ever loved. Both of the writer shows extreme emotion. Human being is who wants to be loved and who knows to give love. Without loved one, life is hopelessness and gloomy and sadden. Both of the poem shows theme and tone of love and sadness.
Air Supply's song title "Lost in Love", this song relates to two of previous poems. Both song and poems shows them of lost in love. In the song, Air Supply sings "I believe there's still much to believe in So lift your eyes if you feel you can reach for star and I'll show you a plan I figured it out What I needed was someone to show me You know you can't fool me I've been loving you too long It started to easy you want to carry on" (Air Supply). This lyrics shows how singer is in deep pain. The tone can be seen as very gloomy. In the end of the song, lyrics repeat singing "Now I'm lost, lost in love, lost in love, lost in love......" (Air Supply). Being lost in love can be very painful to one's heart. Both writer of the poem and Air Supply shows that they are lost in loved ones.
In this society, everyone wants to stay together with their loved ones. The poets and song shows how painful it is if you lose someone they love. All three examples of Love Album can relate to today's society. Nobody is happy to lose their loved ones. Even I want to be with the people that I love.

Martin Luther King said...
Great examples of oppression is shown in the story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. History has shown that women were considered second-class citizens for much of the 19th century, oppressed by the opposite sex for being "weak". This oppression is not uncommon to literature. In this story the author uses the protagonist also the narrator to portray the repression of women during this time period. The anonymous narrator begins the story by telling of her husband and their summer home. The narrator lack of freedom are symbolized through the yellow wallpaper. When the wallpaper is introduced toward the beginning of the story, its color is described in the story as "repellant, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight" (Gilman 317). This quote explains to describe the wallpaper, give of feeling for the wallpaper that is almost sickening and a sense can be representative of the narrator's illness. As his wife's physician, he puts his wife under the rest cure. Cure prohibits the patient from doing any form of work. The inability of the narrator to exercise her mind only seems to make her more ill. She couldn't' receive any feelings of freedom.
"The Story of an Hour" displays female rejection of the norms of society. This story is by feminist writer in the late 1800's, Kate Chopin who has challenged the political norms of society. The story begins with a woman going through the stages of grief for her husband's death. The wife Louise Mallard, this was awakening of a new life. This new life is cutted in short as the information turns false. However at the moment when she found out that her husband passed away she cried as a normal wife. But after she whispered to herself "Free! Body and soul free!" (Chopin 307). Kate Chopin reveals that even the desire for love is trumped by the need for freedom and independence, through her use of precise diction and symbolism. Mrs. Mallard knows now that she only has to live with herself. She does not have to make anyone happy but herself. She now living her life the way she wants she is not going to be chained to her husband. However when she finds out that her husband is not dead, she collapses to the floor and dies of what the doctor later says was of a heart disease or was it a broken heart knowing that her freedom had now been taken away from her in a matter of an hour.
In both stories, it is seen in the stereotypical roles of women that existed in that time period, and in a woman who was not happy playing the role of subservient housewife. Martin Luther King said "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed" this quote explains that people who seek to oppress do so in order to retain power and to prevent others from being empowered. If you wish to free yourself from this kind of oppression then you must demand that freedom and fight for it. That does not have to imply violence, that can imply the legal system, protesting, campaigning. If someone does not want you to be empowered then you must empower yourself. In the examples from the stories that I've chosen, both characters were very thirsty of freedom. All they needed was freedom.

A Streetcar Named Desire
The characters in "A Streetcar Named Desire" are masters of deception. They deceive each other countless times throughout the play, they also deceive themselves. In the story, at one point Stella says "I couldn't go on believing her story and live with Stanely" (1232). This explains that Stella would rather force herself to believe a lie then to face the truth. In reality Stanely is a control freak, a rapist, and would do anything to have things his way. He had enormous self-esteem. But in Stella's dream land none of this is so. She just admitted what she wanted to do so. She wants Stanely to be the perfect husband and them to live happily ever after, no matter what he does. She truly did live the life she imagined.
Throughout history this same mentality of creating dreams as a way to escape reality have be present. The holocaust was a huge tragedy that affected millions of family. “Holocaust deniers are people who contend that the Holocaust - the attempt by Nazi Germany to annihilate European Jewry during World War Two - never happened. According to the deniers, the Nazis did not murder six million Jews, the notion of homicidal gas chambers is a myth, and any deaths of Jews that did occur under the Nazis were the result of wartime privations, not of systematic persecution and state-organized mass murder” (BBC.co.uk). Today people deny that the holocaust took place at all. This is a way to live the "life you imagine" where people don't want to believe that others could do the horrifying things that took place during that time. Stella is the same way. She denies the fact that her sister is right about her husband but lies to herself to keep peace in her dream world
By Blanche telling Stella how Stanley has raped her, Stella believed that it was outrageous of her to even say something like that. Not to mention, the illusion between Stella and Stanley that is present throughout the play. “Don't you ever believe it. Life has got to go on. No matter what happens, you’ve got to keep on going” (Eunice 1232). Eunice is telling Stella to just believe what you want to believe. This leads Stella to believe more in illusion. Stella sees Stanley as a good man and together as an ideal relationship, but in reality they are only physically attracted to each other and Stanley is a drunken and abusive man, which no woman should want to be in a relationship with. Stella uses illusions to save her marriage and keep her promise to her husband. Much likely the politicians we see today's society. Illusions may be aid in temporary relief. However in actuality they lead to demise and distrust in others. Like the characters in the story, we as a society use illusions to deceive one's perception of us.

Moral Law vs. Written Law
In the play Antigone, contrasts two types of
law, moral law versus written law on issues concerning religion. These two laws
are well represented in the play by Creon and Antigone. Creon who strongly
believes and follows wirtten law. Creon punishes Polyneices for attacking
Thebes as being traitor of the land and should not be given burial rights.
Creon is very powerful and strong ruler with enormous ego and high self-esteem.
On the other hand, Antigone is a firm believer in moral law. She was willing to
sacrifice her life for her religious value of burying her brother Polyneices.
Antigone states to Creon "These are the laws whose penalties I would not
incur from the gods, through fear of any man's temper" (Antigone 502-503).
Antigone is determined to make sure that her brother deserves proper burial by
reminding him of the divine laws of God. Antigone doesn't show her respect to
Creon because they both have different beliefs in law.
Antigone clearly states "for myself I myself will bury him. It will be good to die, so doing. I shall lie by his side, loving him as he loved me; I shall be a criminal, but a religious one" (Antigone, 82-85). Antigone loves her brother and is highly confident about her decision to bury her brother. She’s doing this to be fulfill a religious action. Antigone is pleasing god by stating “I know I am pleasing those I should the most” (Antigone, 103). Antigone is pleasing a God It’s a part of her religion to give the dead a burial. This quote shows that she believes in moral law, concerning religion. Antigone fights for the unjust law in which she believes her bother Polyneice shouldn't be buried.
Creon states "he shall be buried in his grave with every rite of sanctity given to heroes under dearth. However, his brother, Polyneices, a returned exile, who sought to burn with fire from top to bottom his native city, and the gods of his own people" (Creon 215-219). Creon believes that the actions he had taken were in fact the right ones. Creon believed that Polyneices was a traitor to the land, and that anyone who should give him a proper burial would suffer the penalty of death. Creon also states " I here proclaim to the city that this man shall no one honor with a grave and none shall mourn. You shall leave him without burial; you shall watch him chewed up by birds and dogs and violated" (Creon 222-225). Creon believed that in order to receive greater respect from your people, you must inflict fear. Creon plays his role as he has such high power. Creon is just a man but he thinks that he had the same power as the Gods.
Antigone stand up for what she believed and I would do what Antigone have done when I was in that position. No matter what price she has to pay for it she does everything to protect her family. Antigone believes highly in obeying, especially when it deals with her family. Antigone goes up against written law by Creon, by burying her brother Polyneices, knowing well that she will have to sacrifice her own life. Antigone leaved her legacy towards her family.
